Product descriptions are the most underrated sales asset in ecommerce. A photo shows what a thing looks like; the description is what convinces someone it’s for them. Here’s the free workflow I use to write them at scale.
Start from the customer’s problem, not the spec sheet
Nobody buys “1000mAh battery.” They buy “lasts all day without a charger.” Translate every feature into an outcome before you write a word. This is thinking, not tooling — do it first.
Use the photo to anchor the copy
Run the product image through a free image caption generator. It’s not the final copy — it’s a way to notice details you’d otherwise miss and to keep the description grounded in what the customer actually sees.
Draft in three layers
- Hook line — the one-sentence reason to care.
- Benefit bullets — three to five, each tied to an outcome.
- Closing nudge — a plain, honest call to action.
Tighten with a rewrite pass
Run the draft through a free sentence rewriter to kill the bloated phrasing, then restore anything that lost its edge. The goal is copy that sounds like a person, not a brochure.
Do it in batches
If you have 50 SKUs, one-by-one is a trap. Group by category, build a template per group, and vary the specifics. This is exactly where batch tooling pays off — I use an offline batch editor for volume work so I’m not tab-switching 50 times.
The bottom line
Conversion copy is 20% writing and 80% understanding the buyer. Free tools remove the mechanical friction; the understanding is the part that makes you money. Start with the two browser tools above — both are in the free AI tools set.
